PITTSBURGH, PA – A variety of programs are offered in conjunction with the upcoming Millet to Matisse: Nineteenth- and Twentieth-Century French Painting from Kelvingrove Art Gallery, Glasgow exhibition at The Frick Art Museum. The exhibition of French paintings will be on view from March 2 through May 25, 2003. Sunday, March 2, 2003 Opening Celebration 12:00 – 6:00 p.m. in The Frick Art Museum Ongoing family activities Free and open to the public Reservations recommended Join us as we celebrate the opening of Millet to Matisse: Nineteenth- and Twentieth-Century French Painting from Kelvingrove Art Gallery, Glasgow. Tuesday, March 4, 2003 Music for Exhibitions: Amherst Saxophone Quartet 7:30 p.m. in The Frick Art Museum auditorium $15 members/students; $20 non-members Reservations recommended Nationally acclaimed Amherst Saxophone Quartet returns to the Frick for an evening of music inspired by the changing palette of late-nineteenth and early-twentieth-century French painting. In a review of a previous Pittsburgh performance, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette called ensemble members Susan Fancher, soprano saxophone; Russ Carere, alto saxophone; Stephen Rosenthal, tenor saxophone; and Harry Fackelman, baritone saxophone “complete masters of their instruments.” A Meet-the-Artists reception follows the performance. Wednesday, March 12 or Thursday, March 13, 2003 Films at the Frick: Gertrude Stein: When This You See Remember Me. 8:00 p.m. in The Frick Art Museum auditorium $5 members/students; $6 non-members This 1970 documentary, directed by Perry Miller Adato, traces Gertrude Stein’s life from girlhood to her three-decade-long reign as the linchpin of Parisian intellectual life. The film includes photographs, interviews, rare black-and-white film footage and paintings from the Steins’ art collection. Adato uses Stein’s own words, as well as those of her peers, to recreate the culture and society from which modernism grew. Black and White/Color. 89 minutes. Wednesday, March 26, 2003 Art at Noon: Art, Morals, Music, and Mayhem in France 1860-1920 12:00 p.m. in The Frick Art Museum auditorium Professor David Wilkins, Department of the History of Art and Architecture, University of Pittsburgh Free and open to the public Professor Wilkins examines the lively and tumultuous cultural and socio-historic context that spawned much of the (then) controversial artwork in the exhibition Millet to Matisse: Nineteenth- and Twentieth-Century French Painting from Kelvingrove Art Gallery, Glasgow. His lecture also examines writings by Baudelaire and music by Stravinsky. Wednesday, April 9, 2003 Week of the Young Child Program: Shifty Shapes/Crazy Colors 10:00 or 11:00 a.m. (30 minute program) in The Frick Art Museum For kids ages 3-5 with their grown-ups Free and open to the public Drop-in program The Frick celebrates the Week of the Young Child with a free tour of Millet to Matisse. Wednesday, May 7, 2003 Adult Lecture: Van Gogh’s World: Past, Present, Future 7:15 p.m. in The Frick Art Museum auditorium Professor Bogomila Welsh-Ovcharov, Department of Art History, University of Toronto $8 members/students; $10 non-members Reservations recommended Professor Welsh examines important work by van Gogh from the Kelvingrove collection, illustrating the artist’s emerging role within the Parisian avant-garde and his lasting legacy. Exhibition Tours Free docent-led tours of the exhibition are offered Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays at 2:00 p.m. Group tours (for groups of five or more) and tours of the permanent collection are available at a cost of $5 per person. Millet to Matisse Shop The Millet to Matisse exhibition inspires a special Museum Shop at The Frick Art Museum. Opening March 2, 2003, the Millet to Matisse Shop offers a sumptuous collection of Country French gift items, including tableware, pottery, tiles, clocks, photo albums, French-themed art books, prints and fine stationery. The Millet to Matisse Shop is open in The Frick Art Museum during regular site hours. The Café at the Frick Before or after touring the exhibition, indulge in the pleasures of The Café at the Frick. Its award-winning menu includes seasonal specials and gourmet desserts. Lunch and tea offered Tuesday – Sunday. Outdoor seating on the patio is available during fair weather. Millet to Matisse: Nineteenth- and Twentieth-Century French Painting from Kelvingrove Art Gallery, Glasgow is organized by the American Federation of Arts and Glasgow Museums.
