PITTSBURGH, PA – A variety of programs are offered in conjunction with the Summer 2003 photography exhibitions at The Frick Art Museum. Sights Once Seen: Daguerreotyping Frémont’s Last Expedition through the Rockies is on view from June 14 through August 10, 2003; Aaronel de Roy Gruber: The Frick Landscapes is on view from June 14 through August 31, 2003.

Wednesday, June 25, 2003 Art at Noon: Fast Forward – Daguerreotype to Polaroid 12:00 p.m. in The Frick Art Museum auditorium Free and open to the public The daguerreotype, developed by Frenchman Louis Jacques Mandé Daguerre in 1839, was not properly updated until 1947, when Edwin Land unveiled the Polaroid process. Linda Benedict-Jones, former curator of the Polaroid Collection, shares images of and insights into these photographic processes and how they helped to define their times. Saturday, July 5, 2003 Kids’ Program: ArtKids -- See the Sights! 10:15 or 11:00 a.m. (30 minute program) in The Frick Art Museum Free and open to the public For children ages 4 – 9 Drop-in program Kids take a pretend journey through the galleries using stamps, their imagination and the Sights Once Seen exhibition to create their own map. Tuesday, July 15, 2003 Music for Exhibitions: Songs Once Heard 7:30 p.m. in The Frick Art Museum auditorium $15 members/students; $20 non-members Reservations recommended Pittsburgh’s beloved mezzo soprano Mimi Lerner leads a journey across America and back in time with an evening of songs once heard. A “Meet-the-Artists” reception follows the concert. Wednesday, July 16 and Thursday, July 17, 2003 Films at the Frick: The Searchers 8:00 p.m. in The Frick Art Museum auditorium $5 members/students; $6 non-members The American West is the focus of one of the Frick’s summer photography exhibitions, Sights Once Seen: Daguerreotyping Frémont’s Last Expedition through the Rockies. In this classic John Ford film, the beauty of the American West is shown in vivid Technicolor through Winston C. Hoch’s stunning cinematography. Ford presents a story of love, hatred and revenge set in the tough terrain of a post civil war frontier. Starring John Wayne with Natalie Wood. 120 minutes. Color. Doors open at 7:00 p.m. so guests may visit the temporary and permanent exhibitions. Saturday, July 26, 2003 Family Program: Letterboxing for Families 9:30 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. (Drop in between 9:30 and noon to start the program in Lexington Education Center); program takes place in Lexington Education Center and on the Frick grounds $5 members/students; $7 non-members $15/$21 maximum fee per family For children ages 7 and up Registration required: call 412-205-2022 Participants make their own rubber stamps, read maps, earn clues by solving word puzzles, and sight along compass lines to find hidden letterboxes on the Frick grounds. Thursday, July 31, 2003 Gallery Walkthrough: It’s All in the Details 7:15 p.m. in The Frick Art Museum $15 members/students; $20 non-members Registration required This gallery walkthrough focuses on the exquisite detail found in daguerreotype photography and on the process behind the making of a daguerreotype photograph. Mark Johnson, President of The Daguerreian Society, will discuss the equipment used and how the process has changed since the 1850s. Thursday, August 7, 2003 Adult Program: West Overton to Clayton – The Frick Landscapes 9:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. in The Frick Art Museum, Clayton and West Overton Museums $65 members/students; $75 non-members Registration required This full-day trip starts at the Frick and then travels by luxury coach to Westmoreland County to visit West Overton, Henry Clay Frick’s boyhood home. Your journey includes a tour of Aaronel de Roy Gruber’s exhibition The Frick Landscapes led by Tom Smart, the Frick’s Director of Museum Programs (images of both West Overton and the Frick site are included in the exhibition); a tour of Clayton; a tour of West Overton Museums; a picnic lunch; and your day ends with Rod Sturtz, Director of West Overton Museums narrating a chartered train ride on the Westmoreland Scenic Railroad through the country landscape that helped shape Henry Clay Frick. Exhibition Organizational and Support Credits Sights Once Seen: Daguerreotyping Frémont’s Last Expedition through the Rockies was organized by the Palace of the Governors, Museum of New Mexico and circulated through TREX: The Traveling Exhibitions Program of the Museum of New Mexico, supported by grants from the Museum of New Mexico Foundation and private donors. Aaronel de Roy Gruber: The Frick Landscapes was organized by the Frick Art & Historical Center. Support for this exhibition has been provided, in part, through the generosity of our members and donors. The Frick Art & Historical Center receives support from its generous members and donors as well as the Allegheny Regional Asset District and the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission. Exhibition Tours Free docent-led tours of the current exhibition are offered every Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday at 2:00 p.m. Group tours (for groups of five or more) and tours of the permanent collection are available at a cost of $5 per person. The Café at the Frick Before or after touring the exhibition, indulge in the pleasures of The Café at the Frick. Its award-winning menu includes seasonal specials and gourmet desserts.
