Joseph Koerner discusses the personal and public dimensions of his father’s art, with particular reference to the way these pictures imagine “home” from a state of exile. Koerner is an accomplished art historian and the author of several books on German art.

The Magic Realism movement inspires further exploration of loss, hope and redemption as interpreted by Pittsburgh musicians. The program will feature a performance of the haunting and powerful “I Remember” by Michael Cohen, based on the diary of Anne Frank.

Hurwitz’s lecture 1933-1939, The Marginalization of the Jewish Community by Nazi Law and Terror recreates the years in which Vienna-native Henry Koerner was living before he left his family at the age of 24 and immigrated to Brooklyn and then Pittsburgh. The 31 images in the exhibition were painted in the years 1945-1955 after Koerner visited Vienna at the war’s close to learn his family had perished. The lecture will be followed by an interactive tour of the Koerner exhibition given by Museum Teachers and a discussion of in-class ideas.

Creative writing workshop led by Thomas Smart, Director of Museum Programs; Nancy Krygowski, poet; and Sherrie Flick, Associate Curator of Education and fiction writer. While looking at concepts of time and memory in reference to the artwork of Henry Koerner and writing, participants sketch on paper and in words to complete a poetic vignette based on their own experiences.

Gallery Walkthrough: Exploring Koerner Firsthand

Thomas Smart, Director of Museum Programs, and Edith Balas, Professor of Art History at Carnegie Mellon University and guest curator of the Koerner and Lustig exhibitions, lead an informal tour of the galleries discussing Koerner’s artistic process and personal stories.

Exhibition Tours
Free docent-led tours of the current exhibition are offered every Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday at 2:00 p.m. Group tours (for groups of five or more) and tours of the permanent collection are available at a cost of $5 per person. Group tour and permanent collection tour reservations must be scheduled two weeks in advance. Call 412-371-0600 for reservations and information.


The Café at the Frick
Before or after touring the exhibition, indulge in the pleasures of The Café at the Frick. Its award-winning menu includes seasonal specials and gourmet desserts. Lunch and tea offered Tuesday – Sunday. Outdoor seating on the patio is available during fair weather.

The Frick Art & Historical Center is located at 7227 Reynolds Street in Point Breeze. Free parking is available in the Frick’s off-street lot, or along adjacent neighborhood streets. Hours of operation: Tuesday – Saturday, 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., Sunday 12:00 – 6:00 p.m.
