A variety of programs are offered in conjunction with the current exhibition at The Frick Art Museum. Empire of the Sultans: Ottoman Art from the Khalili Collection is on view from November 28, 2003 through February 8, 2004.

Educators participate in an interactive tour of select art and artifacts from the exhibition. The evening also includes a lecture by Nahla Nassar, Curator of The Khalili Collection, London, as well as discussion and ideas for both field trips and the classroom.

Participants view Ottoman ceramics and then explore unfired decorative painting techniques to create a beautiful framed tile. Registration cost includes a 6” x 6” bisque tile and rosewood frame.

Set in the Yildiz Palace in Istanbul at the end of the Ottoman Empire, this film reveals the sultry and complex world of Sultan Abdulhamit II’s harem. The film was chosen as a selection “Un Certain Regard” at the 1999 Cannes Film Festival. Directed by Ferzan Ozpetek, 1999. With Marie Gillain and Alex Descas. 110 minutes. Color. Central to the followers of Muhammad is the promise that a heavenly garden will be their reward. Exploring this theme is Delbert Highlands, Professor Emeritus, Carnegie Mellon University; member of the Historians for Islamic Art; and former Visiting Professor for East Technical University, Ankara, Turkey. Professor Highlands will explore Islamic gardens before and during the Ottoman Empire through aspects of the medieval garden, the Ku’ran, architectural features, and objects in the exhibition.

A native of the Turkish Mediterranean town of Mersin, Latif Bolat is one of the most distinguished Turkish musicians in the United States. With degrees in folklore and music, Turkish History, and Middle East Religion and Politics from Gazi University in Ankara, Turkey, Bolat performs a vast repertory that includes songs in classical, folk and Sufi mystic music styles. He accompanies his singing on the baglama (long-necked lute) and various other traditional instruments. Bolat’s appearance at the Frick will include a 45-minute, pre-concert lecture that explores the ancient music, dance and culture of Turkey.

Acoustiguide Audio Tours
Bring the exhibition alive with a FREE Acoustiguide Audio Tour. The tour is narrated by Professor J. Michael Rogers, Honorary Curator of the Khalili Collection, and Tim
Stanley, Deputy Curator of the Khalili Collection, with an introduction by William B. Bodine, Jr., Director, Frick Art & Historical Center.

Exhibition Tours
Free docent-led tours of the current exhibition are offered every Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday at 2:00 p.m. Group tours (for groups of five or more) and tours of the permanent collection are available at a cost of $5 per person. Group tour and permanent collection tour reservations must be scheduled two weeks in advance. Call 412-371-0600 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., Monday through Sunday for reservations and information.


The Café at the Frick
Before or after touring the exhibition, indulge in the pleasures of The Café at the Frick. Its award-winning menu includes seasonal specials and gourmet desserts. Lunch and tea offered Tuesday – Sunday. Outdoor seating on the patio is available during fair weather.

The Frick Art & Historical Center is located at 7227 Reynolds Street in Point Breeze. Free parking is available in the Frick’s off-street lot, or along adjacent neighborhood streets.
