Tom Benner: "The Car Show"

February 26, 2002 - April 14, 2002

Sculptor Tom Benner’s nearly full-size, handcrafted cars will be on view in the Car and Carriage Museum at the Frick Art & Historical Center beginning February 26, 2002. Benner, a Canadian and a practicing artist for over 30 years, is known for his examination of the relationship between humans and nature as well as his interest in Native American cultures. The works in this exhibition pose questions about the way that the automobile industry has shaped our lives and views of history.

The exhibition Tom Benner: “The Car Show”, on view through April 14, 2002, consists of three nearly full-size sculptures of cars – replicas of a 1950s De Soto, a 1958 Pontiac Sky Chief, and a 1950s Chevy Apache. Each car makes reference to the connection between the automobile and its namesake. The De Soto has a carved bust of the Spanish explorer as an enlarged hood ornament and seats upholstered in red pigskin - a reference to the pigs De Soto introduced to North America. The Pontiac Sky Chief is composed of birch bark, pine, and copper, with a deerskin interior – materials used by the Native peoples around Lake Superior. The Chevy Apache is made of solid wood and finished in colors of the American Southwest.
